This summer, NABU, in collaboration with 1 Million Teachers (1MT) and HP, made significant strides in literacy education by enrolling 499 teachers in “The Power of a Read-Aloud” course. From July 1 to September 30, this initiative equipped educators with essential tools to foster a love for reading and enhance literacy outcomes in their classrooms.
The course had a particularly strong impact in Nigeria and Kenya, with 306 teachers from Nigeria and 153 from Kenya participating. It provided educators with vital resources, including lesson plan templates that utilize NABU storybooks. These resources helped teachers design engaging and interactive read-aloud sessions that significantly boost students' language comprehension and reading skills.
A key highlight of the course was its potential to reach rural educators, where access to quality literacy training is often limited. Many participants hailed from underserved communities where training opportunities and resources are scarce. By enrolling in this program, these educators gained invaluable knowledge to help children develop their reading skills.
Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Teachers have praised the course for its practicality and depth, stating that they now have the tools and strategies needed to create impactful reading experiences in their classrooms, thereby helping their students improve both literacy and confidence.
“I conducted a successful read-aloud session that was very impactful. Thank you, NABU, for the lesson plan sheet. I was well-prepared to deliver this session effectively,” said Synthia Ouma, a participant in a training session in Kenya.
NABU remains committed to expanding its outreach and hopes to engage even more educators in the program. By continuing to partner with organizations like 1 Million Teachers and HP, NABU is actively working to close the literacy gap, ensuring that every child has equitable access to literacy education.
