Lighting Up Literacy: NABU and Spark Possibilities Illuminate Over 700 Kenyan Homes with Books

NABU: Lighting Up Literacy: NABU and Spark Possibilities Illuminate Over 700 Kenyan Homes with Books

Nairobi, Kenya – March 20, 2025 – NABU, a global edtech nonprofit dedicated to eradicating illiteracy, and Spark Possibilities, a leader in sustainable energy solutions, are proud to announce the successful completion of their joint initiative, enriching the lives of over 700 Kenyan families by providing culturally relevant books and sustainable energy solutions. The initiative spanned four counties encompassing 15 distinct locations in Kenya - Siaya, Kisumu, Migori, and Homa Bay.

This collaboration was born from a shared vision: to enhance literacy rates among children in Kenya by addressing the dual challenges of limited access to reading materials and reliable energy sources. Recent reports indicate that many children are advancing in school without achieving necessary reading proficiency. By integrating NABU's extensive library of mother tongue books with Spark Possibilities' sustainable energy products, the partnership aimed to create an environment conducive to learning and personal growth.

Key Achievements of the Initiative:

  • Distribution of Books: Over 700 families received culturally relevant books in their native languages, fostering a love for reading and learning among children.
  • Access to Digital Libraries: Families were introduced to NABU's free digital library, expanding their access to a wide range of reading materials.
  • Parental Engagement: The initiative provided reading tips and resources to parents and guardians, empowering them to support their children's literacy development at home.

The initiative has not only provided immediate access to reading materials but has also sparked a renewed interest in education within the communities. "We believe every child deserves the opportunity to read and rise to their full potential. This partnership is a testament to our commitment to providing Kenyan children with the tools they need to thrive," said Beryl Oywer, NABU Regional Manager, East Africa.

Spark Possibilities Managing Director and Co-founder, Hal Peters, added, 'By joining forces with NABU, we strive to create a brighter future. Our goal is to harness the power of solar energy to illuminate homes and empower communities with the gift of education, lighting the path to progress and prosperity.'

Families across these regions expressed immense appreciation for the initiative. Children eagerly engaged with the new reading materials, often sharing them with peers, which fostered a communal reading culture. Parents and guardians reported that the books not only captivated their children's interest but also enhanced their reading habits. Many expressed a desire for more stories, particularly those focusing on life skills, environmental themes, and content tailored to various age groups, underscoring the community's enthusiasm for continued educational support.

Local communities have embraced the program, recognizing the long-term benefits of literacy and sustainable energy. Parents and guardians are encouraged to participate by modeling positive reading habits, starting reading clubs, or volunteering in local schools to read aloud or tutor students.

Following this announcement, Spark Possibilities plans to actively engage communities reached by the campaign, including both customers and non-customers. NABU aims to build a supportive community around this initiative, fostering a culture that values and promotes literacy.
