Pedalmania for Literacy: Empowering Women and Communities Through Cycling

NABU: Pedalmania for Literacy: Empowering Women and Communities Through Cycling

This year’s Pedalmania event, held for the first time on International Women’s Day, was a resounding success, blending a celebration of women’s cycling with a powerful push for literacy. Under the theme “Pedalmania for Literacy,” participants contributed generously to help stock the library of the local school that hosts the race.

A Milestone Event for Women and Literacy

The event achieved several remarkable milestones:

  • Historic Celebration: Marking the first-ever Pedalmania event on International Women's Day, it served as a vibrant tribute to women in cycling.
  • Record Participation: Over 75 women participated, making it the largest and most energetic Pedalmania to date.
  • Literacy Impact: The event successfully collected a significant number of books, directly supporting the school's library and fostering a love of reading.
  • Unwavering Spirit: A strong sense of camaraderie and resilience characterized the event, bringing together both new and experienced cyclists in a spirit of sisterhood.

The Power of Books in Local Languages

NABU was proud to support Pedalmania and continue its mission to provide children with access to books in their mother tongue.

The impact of the book donations was deeply appreciated. Sandra Adikinyi Bwire, Project manager at Rona Riders expressed, "I would like to thank you for your generous book donation of books translated into local languages. This will go a long way in promoting literacy and breaking language barriers for young learners."

Beryl Oywer from NABU shared, "As NABU, we are proud to partner with organizations that prioritize education. Our tools, the NABU App, web reader, and YouTube channel offer hundreds of books in mother tongue languages, empowering children to accelerate their reading journey while enjoying the process."

Through partnerships like Pedalmania, NABU is fostering literacy and empowering communities with culturally relevant reading materials. But we can do even more with your support.
